Memory and Storage on the iPhone 4
Since the iPhone 4 has been hailed as one of the best smart phones of all time, many have become curious about just what exactly is under the hood of the device. When it comes to the processor, Apple relies on the Apple A4 chip for their iPhone 4, a processor designed by Intrinsity and made by a strange source that many might be surprised to learn: Samsung. This is known as a system on a chip type of design that leverages the A8 CPU from Cortex that has a SGX 535 GPU by PowerVR. This is the same chip that has been seen in the Apple iPad tablet PC and has been clocked to run at a speed of 1 GHz, definitely standard for the smart phone market today. Since Apple has not revealed the speed of the processor in the iPhone 4 it should be noted that the iPhone has a history of making use of underclocked CPUs in order to reduce the heat the phone produces and also to extend the life of the device’s battery supply.
In terms of the memory space that comes stock on the iPhone 4, it is 512 MB of eDRAM that helps with the performance of the phone and allows it to be able to run mutliple tasks at the same time. However, this can be expanded with a Micro-SIM card that can be taken in and out of the phone. This is a smaller card than previous models used since they worked with the Mini-SIM format cards. Data would be stored back then in the flash memory and not in the SIM.
